England Captain and Bristol Number 8 Catherine Spencer said: “I’m really excited about playing in the final. It was a tough game against Australia, it was important we got some points on the board early which we did and once again our defence held firm. It was such a hard match but that will put us in good stead for the final.

“It was great to play at the Stoop. The atmosphere was brilliant and I think that will step up again on Sunday so it’s very exciting that we’ll be there and it’s brilliant that it’ll be against New Zealand, the reigning world champions.

“We’re going into the final confident as we beat New Zealand in November and we know we’ve got the potential to beat them again. We’ve just got to keep performing and step up again.

“There was a mixture of relief and happiness at the end of the game. I came off at 60 minutes and it was very hard to watch the last 20 minutes, but I have full confidence in the girls. At the end there was a bundle of emotions - relief that we’d done it and excitement for Sunday.”

Sharks fly half Katy McLean said: “I’m massively excited about playing in a world cup final. After the game it didn’t really sink in that we had got to the final because when the game is over all you’re thinking about is how you performed individually and as a team, but now that it has sunk in it’s amazing and I can’t wait for Sunday.

“The first half was really good for us and then in the second half the Aussies came back and made things more difficult for us. It was really good to have our defence tested and that will do us good coming into the New Zealand game as the Black Ferns are really strong opposition. They’re very tough and they’ve got a great record in world cup finals, so we know it’ll be a hard game.

“We stood strong and it’s good that we didn’t concede any points. Looking back on it I’m sure we’ll be pleased with our performance as we did our job tonight and we’re through to the world cup final.”

England and Richmond fly half and centre Alice Richardson said:
“I’m really excited about getting to the final. I’m tired, but it was a great game out there. We came through and got a hard victory.

“It was a tough game and I can feel the bruises now! It was very physical. They brought it to us. We were lucky to get off the mark early on as after that it was really touch and go and they put us under loads of pressure in the second half.

“I’m relieved that we’ve made the final as it’s where we want to be. I’m going to enjoy the moment and we’ll all start thinking about Sunday tomorrow.”

England Richmond scrum half Amy Turner said:
“I’m feeling really good about the game. We played some awesome rugby and we played the tactics that we wanted to play and that we’d discussed before the game. There are bits to work on as always, but I’m glad to have got that win under the belt and now I’m just thinking about New Zealand in the final.

“I haven’t experienced pace and physicality like that in a game since the last time we beat New Zealand in 2009. Australia definitely upped their game from previous pool matches. It was really physical from the off but the England girls fronted up and our defence was really strong.”

England and Lichfield back row Sarah Beale said: “It’s very exciting to be in the world cup final. It was a really hard game against Australia. It was a tough, physical challenge but we got the win and I’m really pleased that we’re in the final.

“I’ve never played in a world cup final before and it’s very exciting so hopefully I’ll get a chance to go and have a run about.

“There will be a few sore bodies in the England squad after this match as that was a massively physical game but let’s hope there’ll be even more sore bodies in the Australian squad!

“Playing at the Stoop was amazing; playing under the floodlights and to such a big crowd. It was very different from the Surrey Sports Park (SSP). We love playing at the SSP, but it was brilliant to play at such a big stadium
.”

England and Richmond hooker Emma Croker said:
“It’s such a great moment – we’ve beaten Australia here at the Stoop with a home crowd behind us. Now I’m just looking forward to Sunday’s match.

“Playing at the Stoop was amazing. The noise of the crowd felt so close. There was an incredible atmosphere out there on the park. The pitch itself was fantastic, but very fast – it made for a fast paced game.

“Australia are a very good side. They’re a rugby nation and the girls are used to playing hard games. They were hitting us hard. We just had to withstand the pressure and play the territory well and keep them pinned back.”

England and Worcester full back Danielle Waterman said: “I’m ecstatic. We had a really tough game tonight. The Aussies really came at us. But the defence all through the squad was brilliant and keeping them to nil was really important. I’m unbelievably excited for Sunday now.

“It was brilliant playing at the Stoop. The pitch was fantastic and the crowd was brilliant. Obviously we’re looking for more people to come down to the final to fill the stadium but it was brilliant tonight – a great atmosphere and a great facility.

“We treated the semi-final like any other game. Obviously it was a step up from the pool games, but we still saw it as just another game of rugby. Luckily we won and now we’re really looking forward to Sunday.”
