ENGLAND Sevens have named their squad for this weekend’s Las Vegas leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series with wing Alex Davis coming in to replace the injured Marcus Watson.

Jack Walsh has also travelled to Las Vegas as England monitor Tom Bowen's fitness.

Head Coach Simon Amor’s side finished second in New Zealand, falling to the hosts in the final, with both James Rodwell and new signing Warwick Lahmert named in the team of the weekend.

They will now face Argentina, Canada and Kenya in the USA and Amor is looking forward to another tough leg.

He said: “We're extremely pleased with the heart and spirit that the guys showed in Wellington and we're looking to build on that. It's disappointing to lose Marcus, but the injuries we've had have provided other players with the opportunity to come in and impress.

"Once again we're hugely grateful to Dean Ryan and Worcester Warriors who have released Richard De Carpentier and James Stephenson. We've got another tough Pool in Las Vegas, but it's a tournament we're looking forward to.”

England currently sit in fifth position in the overall standings, two points behind fourth placed Australia.

ENGLAND Sevens have work to do on day two of the Last Vegas leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series after a win and a loss on the opening day.

Head Coach Simon Amor’s side beat Argentina 19-17 in their first game, as a brace from John Brake and a try from Tom Mitchell helped them to victory, but a 15-12 defeat to Canada in their second match means England must beat Kenya in their final Pool game on day two today (KO 9.30pm GMT, live on Sky Sports).

Tries from Charlie Hayter and Mitchell had given England a 12-0 lead against the Canadians, but they clawed their way back into the match with a try either side of half time from Lucas Hammond and Harry Jones before Adam Zaruba grabbed a late match-winner.

Elsewhere, hosts USA recorded two wins on day one to book their place in a third successive Cup quarter-final at the USA Sevens.

Having earlier recorded their biggest ever win over Japan to get their campaign underway thanks to a brace from speedster Carlin Isles, Zack Test then scored one of the best tries of the day in their 19-7 defeat of Portugal to ensure they would progress to the last eight at the Sam Boyd Stadium.

They will be joined by defending champions and series leaders South Africa, who are chasing a third consecutive title in Las Vegas, New Zealand and Fiji, who all won their opening two matches on day one in front of a 15,294 strong crowd.

ENGLAND Sevens finished as runners up in the Plate competition of the Las Vegas Sevens, losing 21-14 to Australia in their final game on day 3.

Australia had raced into a first half 21-0 lead, but England had the last say of the half when Alex Gray superbly set up Charlie Hayter to race through and score.

Tom Mitchell’s second half try reduced the deficit to seven points, but the Australians held firm to secure the Plate win, and valuable series points.

Earlier in the day, England beat France 26-5 in the Plate semi-final, tries from John Brake, two from Hayter - including an impressive acrobatic finish - and a late score from James Stephenson sealed the win.

Head Coach Simon Amor said: “We’re really pleased with the effort and commitment from the players. We have a fairly inexperienced squad out here and they have performed very well.

“There was a quick turnaround from Wellington, and we invested a lot physically in that competition, so to come here and get out of a tough pool was pleasing. The exciting thing is that when we get players back from injury there will be a real competition for places and that’s great as we look ahead to the next couple of legs.”
