Both sides had won their two matches, but after a physical start from the USA, England Women sealed their place in the last four.   Emily Scarratt touched down from Katy Mclean’s grubber to open the scoring, then a penalty try, and two Marlie Packer scores - all from driving mauls - secured England their try bonus point after 26 minutes.

Mclean’s dart through space got England up to a 33-7 lead at the break and they continued scoring in the second half with Amy Wilson Hardy and Amy Cokayne.   USA got a late four-try bonus point with Kris Thomas' late effort.

The tournament now moves to Belfast for the play-offs and England will be in the semi-final where they will face the team that finishes in third position in the rankings.

New Zealand were ranked first after the pool stages after their three bonus-point wins but

Captain Sarah Hunter paid tribute to her fellow forwards but insisted despite the emphatic nature of their pool performances they were fully aware their would be tougher tests awaiting them in the knockout stages.

"We knew it would be a tough game but we’re through the semi-final, it’s job three completed and we move on to the next challenge now," said Hunter.

Speaking of their forward dominance, Hunter added: "Our forwards coach Matt Ferguson has done a fantastic job with us, everyone knows their role and their responsibility in the team and together we function really well."
