TRIES from Garth Dew and Nick Canty secured England Under-18s a second successive European triumph in Treviso this afternoon.

Lancashire open-side Dew went in after just five minutes and when Whitgift School winger Canty followed soon after, it looked as if it would be an easier Italian job than last year’s Association Européen de Rugby final against the same opponents.

But the sin-binning of Durham School scrum-half Michael Young for foul play opened the door for France to score a converted try before the break.

The French, with five substitutions, came out firing and went close to scoring on a number of occasions.

However England, who had disposed of Portugal (67-12) and hosts Italy (29-0) on the way to the final held them out and Oakham School fly-half Alex Goode dropped a goal to add to his conversion of Dew’s try to seal victory.

Team manager Ted Atkinson was delighted that England had topped the 32-team tournament, saying:

“We are absolutely over the moon. It was a very tight game against a very physical side. But we held them up front and span the ball wide and it paid off.  “The lads have played some superb rugby during the tournament - they have improved with every game and have been very professional. A lot of credit must go to head coach John Cholewa and his assistants Tim McBennett and Graham Ratcliffe.”
