Warm UpIrish started warming up after the 1st game (which Worcester won) and we spotted Alex Corbisiero training hard possibly hoping to start. Also Eoghan Hickey practicing his kicking for touch and for goal and Jeremy didn’t practice his kicking at all (LKR tells me she has never seen him practising his kicking and could be part of his kicking style and won’t affect his kicking) we shall see if that’s the case. Steffon Armitage was practicing his throwing and well a few went over the top but it’s only the warm up. Shane Drahm injured himself during the warm up (heard someone after the match saying he pulled hamstring) meaning Joe Carlisle started.
Kick Off Teams run out and I notice we’re playing in the white kit with no numbers on the back (good job I know my faces). Also the clock at Worcester isn’t really the best, well it wasn’t even a clock - it seemed to generate random numbers making timings difficult.
To start with Wuss got a steady attack going breaking the gain line a little every so often and getting a kickable penalty for hands in the ruck (2 minutes in according to a phone) Joe Carlisle makes it 3-0 to Wuss.
Then as Wuss kick it out of their 22, Delon who was taking a deep kick didn’t quite keep hold of it and dropped it out over our 22 giving Wuss the throw in. This would eventually lead to a penalty to Wuss for us going in at the side putting them 6-0 ahead with 2 early penalties. Wuss after the kick off clearing their lines, a quick lineout is taken to Delon who then gives a forward pass leading to a Wuss scrum in our half (I do like Delon really but there were 2 noticeable errors.) Jeremy kicked us into their half and they almost kicked us straight back out. Wuss then broke away down the right side and kicked it through almost scoring but for Tagi to scoop it up and clear it at the last possible moment. Then noticed Nils was hobbling but seemed happy to carry on.
My next set of notes read ‘back into our 22 + back out, back in out 22 + back out’ but neither side could really get a good attack going (I would say how long had gone but the clock said 1, so…) Wuss then started an attack until knocking it on then winning that scrum and then forward passing and gaining possession back for all of this time Wuss were only breaking the gain line 1 time out of 3 but we did see some of the ball and this continued for (what felt like) some time.
Not sure how but I found out 35 mins had passed and we had not had the ball in the Worcester 22 until we started a steady attack breaking the gain line and Dodge had a great break through and I am reliably informed (JonR43 and DanR43 told me) that the nearest supporting player was taken out unseen by the ref, me and the rest of the ground. Wuss tried to clear their lines and Delon charged down a kick and pounced on the ball at the same time as a Wuss player and the try wasn’t given (it looked like a try.) Again London Irish were on the attack with Nils breaking through passing to Topsy to go over in the corner, TRY FOR LONDON IRISH. Now Jeremy had a conversion in the corner and I am reliably informed again (LKR told me) that he had 80% out of the last 2 games before this kick, unfortunately he missed the conversion, 6-5.
Again I don’t know how I found out but 43 mins had gone as Wuss were given a penalty about 50m out and calmly kicked by Carlisle making the score 9-5 to Wuss. This brought it to Half Time.
While waiting for the second half to start I was reliably informed (LKR and JonR43 told me) that De Vedia and Shabbo were ushered in quickly.
Substitutions Announced
Faan – D. Murphy (LKR and JonR43 missed that one)
Delon – De Vedia
Nils – Shabbo
(Wuss, Trewmen – Tucker)
This put Topsy at full back, De Vedia on the wing and the centres sorted themselves out.
Second HalfWe kicked off and got the ball back from the kick off, the ball was chipped over the top for Tagi to chase and score with Jeremy converting it 9-12. I then wrote ‘good start’ and whenever that is said/written something bad is sure to happen and strangely enough …. We kicked off again and Wuss started a steady attack and soon enough kick the ball through and a unlucky bounce beating the last man means Joe Carlisle scores and converts, Joe Carlisle 14-12 LI, (I won’t write good start again, I promise)
Then open play began with both teams gaining possession and kicking it away eventually leading to a London Irish penalty about 45m out with Jeremy electing to kick and sending it just past the left post.
After getting the 22 Drop Out back Shabbo broke the Wuss defence being stopped 10m’s out (I say about as it was down the other end of the pitch,) Jeremy then coolly slotted a drop goal bringing us back into the lead, Wuss 14-15 LI.
Wuss then started to attack again with 2 chances with almost 2 intercept tries one given as a knock on and one as a slap down. Wuss getting very close to the line after a while, then Jeremy stole the ball back and ended up on the blind side against 4 Wuss men, he hacked the ball from out 22m line through all 4 men with Tagi chasing (some debate in our house about Tagi being on or off side.) Tagi then gives a grubber with 50m’s to go and another on the 22 with a clear run ahead scoring a good counter attack try, which was un-converted bringing the score to Wuss/Carlisle 14 – 20 LI.
Substitution
Steffon – Dec
A small period of general play (getting the ball, losing the ball, getting the ball, etc)
Substitutions
P.Murphy – McCullen, (2 Wuss changes)
Wuss eventually get an offside penalty against Dec in front of the posts and not that far out. The ref signals for the posts bringing a boring sigh from the Wuss support behind us. Carlisle then misses the easy penalty bringing and even bigger sigh from the Wuss fans behind us and a ‘how did he miss that?’
Substitutions
Hudson – Nick
Johnson – Roche
Fury – Dodge
(at this point I didn’t think there was that long to go)
Play continues with LI in possession in Wuss half. Penalty given for hands on the floor in front of posts, Jeremy makes the score Wuss 14-23 LI.
Kick off and we get the ball with Jeremy ready to clear, and he misses touch again (he seemed to do that a lot today) more general play eventually leading to 2 simultaneous penalties for offside (the clock had been on 70mins for about 17mins) Wuss now with a good attacking platform.
Substitution
Skuse – Corbisiero
Wuss keep a steady attack, not breaking the gain line that often. (the Wuss fan
behind us then commented on how long the clock had been stuck on 70mins for, but as he said that it changed from 70 to 88, Help!) London Irish got the ball in our 22 and pass back to Jeremy in the pocket who knocks the ball on giving Wuss the scrum.
Substitution
Hickey – Topsy, Hickey moves to Full Back.
I shall now put exactly what the notes said:
Wuss pen on 5m
Wuss attack
Wuss scrum
Wuss Pen
Wuss over line
Ref not sure, held up
Full Time.
Full Time Score: Worcester Warriors 14 – 23 London Irish aka: Joe Carlisle 14 – 23 London Irish
Defence – seemed solid, Wuss weren’t really breaking gain line much.
Attack – Pack, was going forward, Backs – Kept up the pace.
The day after we went to 02 Scrum in the park. Phil Murphy and Richard Thorpe were both there so I couldn’t resist asking them for a short summary.
Thorpe – ‘Tranquil (Joking voice!), Keep on truckin’
Phil – ‘Disappointing first half’ then he said about the second half being better. (can’t remember the exact word so I can quote him!)
