... we arrived at Reading station to find my Uncle and Grandad already in the 3Gs. We had already arranged for them to have got me a coke and Mick and Dad something stronger so after a quick drink we headed off to the what seemed like a mile long bus queue.
It was about two when we got to the ground. None of us had eaten so heading over to a burger van seemed like a good idea. Following a quick cheese burger we got to our seats about half two. When Caimh was announcing the teams we noticed that the try scoring Thorpedo was the only change from the offys announcement.
Irish kicked off in the first half going from right to left. (Eds note, that's going to confuse a few.) The first play of any note was a break from the Hoff who then spun it wide to Topsy who unfortunately knocked it on. From the resulting scrum we got the ball and the ref gave us a first opportunity for the sticks. PH stepped up and knocked it over.
London Irish 3-0 Gloucester (Peter Hewat 1 from 1).
Seven minutes later another slick move from the backs resulted in Hewat dropping it at the last hurdle. A great scrum became another opportunity for Hewat.
London Irish 6-0 Gloucester (Peter Hewat 2 from 2).
Mark Foster then tried an up and under; it bounced on half way Delon picked up, spun through a tackle and set off on an arcing run round Lamb and braving a tackle from Vainkolo to slide over in the corner. Hewat missed the con.
London Irish 11-0 Gloucester (Peter Hewat 2 from 3).
We then gave away a silly pen and Lamb knocked it over.
London Irish 11-3 Gloucester (Ryan Lamb 1 from 1).
Delon off Shane on. The other Armitage then went on a darting run before being pulled down. Dodge then picked up from the ruck and flew over under the posts.
London Irish 18-3 Gloucester (Peter Hewat 3 from 4).
Wavy then gives pen for off our feet
London Irish 18-6 Gloucester (Ryan Lamb 2 from 2).
Then we have scrum and Glaws can’t take it so they collapse it.
London Irish 21-6 Gloucester (Peter Hewat 4 from 5).
We then get back into our own half and give away another silly penalty.
London Irish 21-9 Gloucester (Ryan Lamb 3 from 3).
Half time.
The players came out about 4ish and they kicked off. A poor kick off from Walker(on for Morgan) resulted in a LI scrum. From the scrum Gloucester were awarded a penalty which Walker bounced off the bar and over.
London Irish 21-12 Gloucester (Willy Walker 1 from 1).
I have a note that none of Gloucester’s throws were straight and I am sure anyone, especially in the west , will agree. Then Dec came on for thorpey. We then get a penalty for not rolling away.
London Irish 24-12 Gloucester (Peter Hewat 5 from 6).
Rochey then came on for Jimmy. Glaws the got a penalty for Shane not binding on the back of the scrum.
London Irish 24-12 Gloucester (Willy Walker 1 from 2).
Tindall panics in his 22 and hits a horrendous kick (or not) to just outside their 22.We then got a penalty on the Gloucester 22.
London Irish 27-12 Gloucester (Peter Hewat 6 from 7).
We got a scrum on the ten metre line which became a penalty. Hewat once again turned it into points. He was kicking sublimely!
London Irish 30-12 Gloucester (Peter Hewat 7 from 8).
Gloucester cleared the ball to their 10m line. It fell to Hoff who chucked it to Tagi who broke through about four tackles to dot it down in the corner.
London Irish 35-12 Gloucester (Peter Hewat 7 from 9).
We were chasing the bonus point and had a penalty on their 22. We took a scrum but Gloucester got the ball and ran. They made it to half way when Dad said to me he would love an interception. As he spoke Hoff ripped the ball it bounced and Dec raced over by the posts!!
London Irish 42-12 Gloucester (Peter Hewat 8 from 10).
So a bonus point win against Gloucester, eh! Not too bad!! Rumour has it that Dean Ryan was so disgraced he took the train home instead of the players' coach!
London Irish 42-12 Gloucester
