Caldy v Blues

Blues make another trip North for an away game against Caldy. After our last 2 away games against Chinnor and Knight, we need Blues to turn up for this! Caldy away is a tricky game especially if the weather and pitch are not in great condition with Caldy being quite a physical side.

Blues will be looking to get the Caldy big props moving and will want to come out and play at the same speed as they did against Scottish, but hopefully with a bit more penetration.

The Blues were impressive with the speed of play but Scottish did pretty well to contain us.

Team wise it will be interesting to see who is back fit. Hoskins made an impact off the bench against Scottish, with 2 turnover penalties and a break that should have led to a try. Adamson also added an extra dimension in attack which we had been missing and Hutler had one of his best games of the season.

Blues will ideally want a 2nd row back (Woolford or Ward or both) and Tuilagi. Herman has also been playing better more recently, so may start as he adds extra physicality with his ball carrying.

Well it seems like Rayer doesn’t agree with us about selection because Hoskins has dropped out the squad entirely and Lennon drops back to bench. Also thought Worth played well at 13 and would’ve preferred to keep him there with Hutler on the wing and Booj/Titherington at 12.

Tom Price has also left the club, presumably frustrated at the lack of game time. I do think he should’ve been given a start in either the game against Ampthill or Scottish. I thought he was a decent player and now leaves us very short at fly half with Maisey likely needing to play 80 every week (like he did last season). Saints don’t really have anyone they can lend us in an emergency, although Pater has played there a bit I think.

I am trying to be positive about the Caldy game, disappointed about players leaving the fold with still plenty of games to be played.

The conditions at Caldy will be to the advantage of the home side, the weather will not help us either......so nothing new there.

Team selection is as ever down to Mike Rayer (in whom we trust)....

As I said I am trying to be positive, we need a five pointer but will be happy with any points, hoping the best ....but seeing Banana skins ....

Not often I cheer a Nottingham win, but their win over Worcester makes our game against Caldy all the more interesting....

I agree a tough afternoon ahead. I watched their game with Worcester, and they kept going even when well behind. Always a tough opponent despite what the table says.

Shame about Price, but I can understand. Who else has left mid season?

Maisey seems to have left his kicking boots at home

Ironic that Maisey kicks so badly on the day that Price withdraws.

Positives: 5 points for the cause. Everyone got match time. Plenty of positive open play. No head injuries. Deserved to win, but should have been easier. Strong defensive set in final 3 minutes.

Negatives: we left conversion points out there. We almost conceded killer points at the very end when we should have been out of sight, given how many second half red zone visits we had. Too many discipline issues, especially in the first half.

Not sure about the referring, but that’s a side issue. Shall watch it again, but suspect many, many occasions when Caldy were too quick and therefore offside. Just watch their charge down try for example.

Anyway, history now. Well done lads.

Will take the 5 points. We should’ve been out of sight, but was convinced Caldy were going to nick it in the end. Caldy offered absolutely nothing in attack all game and could only make territory from penalties/blues mistakes and despite that we still gave them a chance to win it by conceding needless penalties in the last 10 minutes. Need to be more clinical from 5m out and no idea what happened to Maisey’s kicking but more positives to take than negatives. Thought Conway, Evans, Tuilagi and Titherington were our best players. Clutch turnover from Joe Hill to win the game.

It was noticeable the scrum struggled when a certain someone came on, this gave Caldy a route back in.

Again we lacked the cutting edge in the backs, which is a worry really. Caldy should never have been in the situation where they could have nicked it even with Maisey not kicking, we should have had 7/8 tries.

Lennion had played 10 before and Le Borgeois wanted to do it when he first came to the club. I think Pater is best at full back or wing!

Good to be back 2nd, which means we don’t necessarily need to win against Worcester, but in reality anywhere in the top 4 is good as we get a home game. It is only Ealing who get 2, but they should have had the final at MK Dons or Quins, Saints, Tigers, somewhere to make it a speical occasion.

Price’s kicking from hand and at the posts has been pretty average when he did get game time.

He was actually pretty good, it was only the last couple of cameos it was not that good, but that is becuase he didn’t play. He was better than Grimoldby but for some reason didn’t get a look in.

I think the 1st minute against Hartpury almost ruined his season, he had an opportunity to shine then but got a yellow card clashing with his brother!
