It may currently be difficult for Coventry Rugby on the pitch this season as they struggle to find the consistency required for mounting a serious challenge to National League 1, but off the pitch there is much better news providing the club with the impetus and the means towards their long term aims.

Coventry Rugby Chairman Jon Sharp has reported that Management Accounts for the club’s year ended 30^thJune 2012, show that all the hard work being put in behind the scenes is paying off. The club’s revenues increased by 50% year on year and we have moved from a loss-making position to one of a modest profit. All available spare cash is turned back into the club to fund playing staff, improvement of the facilities and new equipment. The intention of the board is to continue in this way; every pound we earn is to be used in developing the present and future of Coventry Rugby. The key here has been and is the development of a sustainable business plan encompassing a number of different sources of income and we have three main pillars of income in our business plan.

Firstly we have a variety of club sponsors and benefactors and we are extremely grateful for what they do for the club, no matter how large or small. However we cannot risk being reliant on them alone, nor would they want us to be. Next we have developed our focus on match day income and we try to improve the experience for all present. Improved match day catering and packages have been initiated to this end and we are receiving great reviews.

Finally we have been busy selling the fine facilities we have here at the Butts Park Arena and can accommodate   a wide range of events from business seminars through sporting lunches to wedding parties; numbers of ten to three hundred can be catered for.

As part of Coventry Rugby’s aim to be part of the wider community the importance of the legacy of the 2012 Olympic Games cannot be ignored, and rightly so. As part of this aim Phil Maynard Coventry Rugby’s Rugby Director has been invited to attend a local conference named “Inspiring Sport in Coventry”. This Conference under the auspices of the Coventry Sports Foundation is being held at their Head Office the Xcel Centre Mitchell Avenue Coventry. Its main Guest at the conference is the Labour Party Deputy Leader and Shadow Culture Secretary Harriet Harman, who was so instrumental in setting up the British Olympic bid and its ultimate success.

Well done the Board. Perhaps it will come good in the long run, but it's essential to improve the team's performance now. Not the Championship now but a top six side first, by a team playing Rugby that gives the supporters some confidence for a better future.

I have to agree with Roger. The board have been pretty amazing the way they've pulled things from the brink in the last few years. To get to this point off the pitch is superb but I'm waiting for the big push to start on it. Come on Cov give the board and loyal fans something to cheer for Xmas!!

This is endeed good news. Financial security ia absolutely paramount to the continuity of an organisation, and Mr Sharp and his team are to be congratulated for the dogmatic way in which they have secured the club in order to ensure a future.
I've been looking back at the report of the "meet the supporters" meeting when Mr Sharp outlined his ambitions for the club and, in principle he is right on the money. Unfortunately, however, the reality of the situation does not match his words.
He talked about two things, in particular:-
Ambition Quite rightly he commented that, without ambition, the excercise of being club chairman would be pointless. He would do well to look at the results this season and to ask himself the question as to whether they reflect a club which is exhibiting all the cut, thrust and desire which are hallmarks of ambition.
Promotion He states that he wants promotion by 2014. From my observation I would say he hasn't got a prayer.
In any business plan, you need objectives, and objectives which are SMART, the "R" standing for REALISTIC. I regret to tell you, Mr Sharp, that it is patently clear that your objectives, laudible though they may be, are entirely unrealistic. They are not being realised by the team performances.

Having said that, I wish the team every possible success today at Sedgeley Park. If ever a team was there for the taking, it's Sedge, and I so much hope we can come away not only with a win, but with five points.
