IN THE first competitive meeting between the clubs, Alcester bowed out of the Vase but only after a great performance in conditions that resembled a swamp after heavy rain during the previous 48 hours. Injuries and work commitments forced Alcester into changes including first senior starts of the season for club chairman, Steve Lunn at tight head and director of rugby, Nick O'Connor at No 8, but the veteran warhorses savoured excellent performances.

Playing up the slope in the first half, Alcester edged ahead through fly-half Ash Newdick's penalty while soon after the lead was extended as Jim Watson sprinted over the line for a very well worked try. Newdick added the extras.

Slowly the Kingfishers moved into a higher gear with an unconverted try and penalty to move to within two points of their rivals at 8-10 before Newdick hoisted over another well struck penalty for the visitors. The response was a Redditch try with their best move of the match to draw level at the break while in the second half, both teams grafted hard in the muddy conditions but it was the Kingfishers who snatched the glory with their third and decisive try.
