Coventrians 20 Shipston on Stour 19

IN-FORM Coventrians produced an upset by beating higher league Shipston-on-Stour by the narrowest of margins to stretch their splendid recent run to four victories in a row. The Midlands 4 side made the initial breakthrough with an unconverted try. But Covents rolled up their sleeves and snatched the advantage through No 8 Carl Thornton as he intercepted a quick line-out to sprint in from 30 yards with Michael Douglas landing the extras to give their side a 7-5 lead.

Covents increased their lead within 90 seconds of the restart.

Flanker Kieran Martin passed inside for Paul Brindley to touch down, Douglas again making no mistake with the conversion.

But Shipston relied quickly thanks to a converted try to cut the arrears to 14-12.

But dead-eyed Douglas booted over two crucial penalties as Covents went 20-12 in front and though Shipston came back hard to score a converted try in injury time it was too little too late to foil the overjoyed Covents.
