Having doubled up on a regular basis for the past few weeks, Dan Norton is the perfect man for Moseley’s historic double header. The mercurial wing, who celebrates his 21st birthday on Sunday, has timed his run of form to perfection as the Red and Blacks look to secure both a National Trophy final at Twickenham and a vital league win, in a single sitting. High-flying Exeter Chiefs stand in their way at Billesley Common tomorrow and while the relative strengths of the combatants point overwhelmingly towards an away victory, Norton believes his team have a chance of causing what would be a huge upset.

That is because he is a young man high on confidence and so he should be. His first senior try for six weeks against London Welsh put Moseley into the cup semi-finals and he followed up with a brace in last Saturday’s 51-17 hammering of Sedgley Tigers.

Since then he scored twice more in Hartpury College’s BUCS quarter-final against Leeds Metropolitan on Wednesday. As they say, when you’re hot, you’re hot.

Which is just as well because with Moseley’s well-publicised midweek matches on the horizon and the Gloucester Academy product’s extra commitments with Allan Lewis’ students, he will get ample opportunity to ride the crest of his current wave.

In fact he is approaching HQ’s hallowed turf on two fronts, with Moseley this weekend and as part of Hartpury’s Intermediate Cup challenge. Times are good for Norton.

But that had not been the case until recently. The smiling assassin had been a shadow of the mischievous sprite who last term deprived Nathan Bressington of a fourth season as top scorer.

Norton’s game seemed to be more about his defensive deficiencies than his free-spirited attacking and it came to a nadir in January when Rotherham’s Jon Feeley blazed past him twice inside 15 minutes as though he were little more than a wispy child.
