When Adam Clayton rounded off a dazzling Bees performance with a try five minutes from time, it was fitting that the two teammates in support were back row partners Rob Connolly and Chris Brightwell. The trio, together with Leo Halavatau who made way for Clayton in the latter stages of this wind-affected clash, were the stars in this match – a fact that not lost on coach Eugene Martin. “I’m very proud of the boys, especially our tight five and the back row who were very physical,” he explained.

“I  have to take my hat off to them; normally, it is the backs who set up our games but not today. The back row were unbelievable, particularly their workrate throughout the entire 80 minutes.

“The guys really wanted to make a statement today and the game was 80 minutes of high intensity.”

Playing into the gale in the first half, the Bees must have been delighted to reach the interval on level terms – a Rod Petty try and a couple of Mark Woodrow kicks matching Dave Knight’s converted try and a Freddie Burns drop goal.

The visitors, already without that battering ram of a centre Cameron Mitchell due to a training-ground injury, were further hindered when midfield partner Scott Young hobbled off inside the opening 20 minutes with what appeared to be hamstring trouble.

But they had no need to worry as outstanding tackling, together with the rampant runs of the forwards, led to four second-half tries without reply.

Connolly was first to carve his way through on 56 minutes, with Woodrow adding a try to his tally soon after.

Brilliant handling and running from full back Reece Spee, hooker Ben Phillips and Petty continually put Cinderford on the back foot and it came as little surprise when Halavatau crossed for a fourth try to secure the bonus point.
