Waterloo 10 Rugby Lions 24

RUGBY LIONS returned to winning ways with a 24-10 victory against a cash-strapped Waterloo with a dominant and powerful display. With a team that showed seven changes from their loss against rivals Broadstreet, Lions always looked to be in control of this battle against a spirited Waterloo side.

Rugby had a golden opportunity to take the lead early on but any chance was denied following a forward pass, and they continued to beat down the Waterloo door until Lloyd Warner kicked three penalties in quick succession to make it 9-0.

But the Lions then gifted the hosts a score with a tame piece of defending that allowed Liam McGoy to go over five minutes before half-time in a moment that threatened to undo all of Lions’ previous hard work.

But Warner started the second period by kicking another penalty for the visitors, before Phil Reed rounded off Rugby’s best move of the match to make it 19-7 after 47 minutes.

Jeff Gregson then powered over following a heavy spate of Rugby pressure to enhance the advantage, which other than a late Waterloo penalty, proved to be the final actions as Lions were content to keep what they held.
