Coventry skipper Nick Southern out for eight weeks

COVENTRY skipper Nick Southern will be out for up to eight weeks after suffering a finger injury in Saturday's 30-20 defeat at Sedgley Park. The No.8 snapped a tendon in the first-half of the game at Park Lane, but completed the 80 minutes before going to hospital where it was confirmed that he will need an operation.

“It’s a nasty injury and he will be missing for six to eight weeks,” said rugby director Phil Maynard. “It’s a big blow to us – Nick didn’t say much at half-time, he just taped the finger up and carried on which is the type of player he is.”

Cov went into the break with a 20-10 lead, scoring three tries, but showed little attacking threat for the final half hour as Sedgley Park came back to edge ahead with nine minutes to go and then sealed their win with an injury-time try.

“The game should have been won after our first-half performance,” conceded Maynard. “We were running straight, building phases and creating opportunities.

“But we stopped doing that and let them back in by kicking too much without enough direction or control, and again we missed too many tackles.

“The seminal moment was just after half-time when we had a line-out five metres from their line and went for a quick throw which didn’t work. We should have scored from that position, and it would have made a massive difference to the game.

“It was crucial, and another sign that we are a young side which has to learn.”

Sounds like a horribly freak accident to happen.
All the best with the recovery.
Hope to see you back in a Cov shirt soon.

A real pity about the skipper and ust what we didn't need, one of the older heads lost for at least 2 months.

Best wishes to Nick for a speedy recovery, no-one likes to hear of any player getting a serious inury.
