Lock Sam Herrington puts try scoring form down to maturity

SAM Herrington believes his growing maturity as a player is the secret behind this season’s try-scoring success. The powerful second row grabbed two in Saturday’s controversial 29-28 defeat at Blaydon to take his tally for the campaign to five. And having failed to register a single one during last term’s relegation it is evidence that the former Moseley and Dudley Kingswinford lock is growing as a force in the Coventry side.

Certainly his value to Phil Maynard’s squad is underlined by the fact he is one of only four players to have started all eight games and he is also now the club’s leading scorer, having overtaken Alex Nash at the weekend.

Indeed four of those scores have come in the last four matches and Herrington maintains they are a sign that he is doing what is asked of him.

“For me it is about doing my job right and part of that is carrying the ball,” the 24-year-old said. “It was my job last year but I did not think I was doing that well enough.

“I am doing it much better now and as a result I have got the tries.

“My role is to get over the gain-line and give the side a target, if that takes me to the try-line then all the better.”

Herrington puts his development down to improvements he has made both physically and psychologically.

“I weighed in at 120 kilos on Saturday, which is seven kilos lighter than last year and that makes a big difference,” he said.

“I am also maturing more as a player and have made the mental decision that I am going to carry the ball come what may.

“Last season I always felt I had a lot more to offer but wasn’t always used so I sat down in the summer and thought about things.

“Was I being loud enough? Was I in the right positions enough? I decided I could do more.

“Now my approach is I expect to get the ball all the time and if I don’t it’s because someone has run a better line than me.”
