WHILE it is Tom Warren’s try-scoring heroics that have caught many eyes, Phil Maynard has praised his young prop’s development in the less glamorous arts of front row play following another solid National One showing.The 21-year-old loosehead, dual registered with Premiership side Northampton, scored twice in Coventry’s gutsy 25-19 victory over Sedgley Park last Saturday.

That took his total to five in six games and extended his run of starts to eight for a rookie in his first year in semi-professional rugby.

And while he is hot on the heels of lock Sam Herrington in the try-scoring stakes, most of which have come from riding mauls, Maynard says he has shown more important qualities.

“Tom is going from strength to strength as he needs to do because his learning curve is very steep,” the rugby director said.

“He is a good player with the right attitude and I think he can make a good living out of rugby as long as things go his way.

“He is a talented kid who is strong and a good scrummager but more importantly has got an edge to him. You need more than ability to make a career as a professional rugby player and Tom has got that.”

Warren is expected to continue in the No. 1 shirt for this weekend’s trip to Cinderford, a match that could see Cov go into the top five.

This young man is one of the 18 year olds in the team. Each week he is turning in good performances. I for one do not expect to see this lad in a Blue and White shirt next season. He will probably be at a Championship club next season. If your good enough you're old enough. Being the yardstick for this.

I disagree, Covmick. 18 is very young for a prop. I think they need to be given time to develope physically and technically. Another season with Cov would be in his best interests at this stage in his career. You never know, by the time he's 20 he could be playing for Cov in the Championship.

when i interviewed Tom in august he was aged 20 then, so not an 18 year old now,I think you are mistaking him for another player(s).

There was a very good section of Radio 5 live on Weds or Thurs evening this week, with Dick Best, Phil Vickery, and Ben Kay. The raging Bull spoke on this point and how dangerous/hard it was to go from Youth/SchoolBoy level into propping against experienced men. He was audibly whincing at the memory of him playing for Redruth against a Leeds side when he ws 18.

It echoed my own experience, and last week the Leicester coaching staff kept Engalnds Dan Cole away from Northamptons Soane as long as possible, knowing that Castro the older Italian prop would be the better able to deal with him.

Excuse the name abbreviations above, my Tongan and Italian are not at their best in the mornings...
