COVENTRY centre Nat McDonald insists Saturday’s clash with Cambridge was a step in the right direction despite the fact they were left with nothing to show for their efforts.

The former Worcester trainee, who after this weekend’s trip to Macclesfield could be away for several weeks if he makes the final Irish squad for the Under-20 Six Nations, was part of a home side that lost 26-14 to the free-flowing Blood and Sands.

That was Cov’s second consecutive defeat since the resumption of the National One programme but even though they didn’t manage to take anything tangible from the match, the 20-year-old insists it was a vast improvement on the 26-0 reverse at Cinderford seven days earlier.

Indeed the Blue and Whites were on the brink of an outstanding victory as they had the position and possession from which to overturn the 19-14 deficit only to squander both and allow visiting skipper Darren Fox to deny them anything with an 80th-minute try.

“It was definitely a step forward,” McDonald said. “Cambridge are the highest scorers in the league and there are plenty of positives we can take.

“Our defence was pretty outstanding, they attacked for the whole game – they didn’t kick at all but we reacted quite well.

“And there was a bit of variety to our game, we played some very good rugby in quite difficult conditions.

“I would say we were worth a bonus point.
