RUGBY director Phil Maynard insists that Coventry will come good if they continue to play with the same intensity shown in Saturday’s 19-18 home defeat by Barking.Cov were sunk by a penalty in the fourth minute of stoppage time after twice leading the unbeaten National League One leaders and outscored their visitors on tries.

But despite the final outcome – Cov’s fifth successive defeat – Maynard was happy with the overall performance of the side which included on-loan Northampton full-back Charlie Sadler for his debut.

“We deserved more from that,” said Maynard.

“The lads played very well again but at the moment we are not getting any of the rub.

“We had problems with our line-out, although to be fair to Barking they defended it better than any side we have played this year, and there are one or two things to iron out.

“But our defence today was excellent, we are playing some good rugby and as long as everyone shows the same commitment and focus I am confident that we will quickly start winning.”

Scottish RFU referee Cammy Rudkin awarded the final penalty when he ruled that Cov collapsed a scrum 35 metres out – a decision disputed by the home forwards.

“We didn’t see it like that,” said Maynard, “but the way the laws are now is making it very difficult to referee the front row.”
