Phil Maynard delighted to end losing streak with win

RELIEVED rugby director Phil Maynard applauded his side’s work ethic after Coventry ended their five-game losing run in National League One with a 23-10 victory over Blaydon.Cov, who climbed above Blaydon in the table as a result of the win, dominated for long periods of the game on a difficult Butts Park Arena pitch before digging deep in their own 22 in the closing minutes to deny the visitors a losing bonus point.

“After all the effort the players have put in over the last few weeks it was important to win today,” said Maynard. “It would have been very difficult to keep their heads up if we’d lost again.

“They worked for each other for 80 minutes and they are realising that if they do this and continue to work hard through the week, they will get the results.

“They just need a bit more confidence and those balls that were dropped today will stick.

“The conditions dictated the way we played, it called for simple rugby and I was pleased with the way we kept the pressure on in the first half although we perhaps tried to play too much of an open game in the second half.

“We closed the game down in the last ten minutes after scoring our third try when perhaps we should have got the message out to go for a fourth and the bonus point but we stopped Blaydon getting one which was just as good.

“It was important not to let them have anything from the game and I’m happy with the four points.”
