Maynard wants more of the same as Coventry face Redruth

RUGBY director Phil Maynard is calling for more of the same from Coventry in tomorrow’s rescheduled National League One game at Redruth.Maynard was delighted with the team’s work rate and commitment in last week’s 23-10 home win over Blaydon as they ended a run of five league defeats. And he stresses it will take the same approach to get a result in Cornwall against a Redruth side that has won two of their last three games, including an away victory at fourth-placed Macclesfield.

“We gave a good, hard-working performance in the difficult conditions and it was very encouraging,” said Maynard.

“We showed a definite sense of maturity in the way we kept using the ball, putting it behind them and making them work from the back and I was really encouraged by our performance in the forwards – they put their foot down from the start and kept it there.

“It’s all based around hard work and now we need to go down to Redruth and perform in the same way to get our away form up to a different level.”

The two clubs are separated by five places in the table but a win tomorrow could lift Redruth to within two points of Cov as they battle to climb out of the bottom three relegation spots.

“You’ve only got to look at what Redruth have done in their last four or five games to know that it will be very difficult for us,” said Maynard. “They are putting a bit of a run together and they’ll have targeted this game as one to win, so we will have to be switched on from the start.”

Cov show just one enforced change with loose head prop Luke Beales returning to the starting line-up in place of Martin Kent, who broke his hand in last week’s win. Jon Pateman is called on to the bench.

Cov added two more players to their squad before yesterday’s transfer deadline, bringing in 20-year-old second row forward Tom Hicks – an England age-group international – from Northampton and former Market Bosworth winger Luke Veebel from Leicester Academy for the remainder of the season.

Kick-off at The Recreation Ground is 2.30pm.

Coventry: (probable) Sadler; Gregson, Stevens, Green, Harris; Russell, Audis; Beales, Ager, Parkins, Herrington, Southern, Daynes, Nash, Pearson. Reps: Read, McDonald, Pateman, Price, Tibbatts.
