TEAM spirit was key to Coventry’s success at Redruth on Saturday as they bounced back from a calamitous start to record a 43-31 victory.Trailing 26-7 after 23 minutes, Cov turned the game on its head in the second half to draw level midway through the final quarter before sealing their second away win of the season with two more tries.

“What these lads are doing is generating a great team spirit, which is something you can’t buy,” said rugby director Phil Maynard. “They all pull together

“At 26-7 I thought that was it, but once we sorted out where we were and got our press defence working again, we started slowing them down and got into them.

“At half-time we just told them to stick to their drills and what they do well, and it was a fantastic second half performance. We got them down in Hell Fire Corner and didn’t let them out.”

Left wing Tom Harris ran in a hat-trick of tries on either side of half-time and second row forward Sam Herrington – the team’s leading try scorer for the season on 13 – reeled off the last three in a 12-minute burst as Cov’s forwards took control.

“Tom was outstanding today, his pace worried Redruth all game,” said Maynard, “and it was backed up by Sam who is hard to stop with the rest of the pack behind him. We’ve had a few bad starts this season, but the lads always work hard for each other and once we got going, you could see it would be difficult to stop us and we closed the game out very well. We played some tremendous rugby.”
