Coventry Rugby are pleased to announce 2 further forward signings for their squad for the forthcoming season, with Tom Cowell, hooker, and Bruce Thomas, back row, taking the new seasons squad numbers up to 36..
Tom Cowell, a hooker, comes in from Midlands 2 side Willenhall (Staffs), where he has been 1st team captain for the last 3 years. Tom, aged 23, after recovering from a knee injury some years ago now wishes to prove himself at a higher level. He has already turned out last season for the Coventry Nighthawks side, where he put in an abrasive and impressive display around the field.
Bruce Thomas, aged 24, whose preferred position is at No7, comes to Coventry after a short spell playing for San Francisco, USA. He was previously at Luctonians after a spell at Rotherham Titans. A vocal performer on the field Bruce is now looking to enhance his rugby career ambitions.
Coventry Rugby continue their build up to the new season with a match against Welsh Premiership side Newport this coming Saturday kick off 3pm, at the Butts Park Arena. Admission is £5 with U16’s free. Coming after such an excellent performance against a strong Championship side Doncaster Knights, Coventry will be looking to build on that in improving match fitness and looking at various team options.
Willenhall are midlands 3 as well, i would assume he played 8 for them at that level because he was more useful at the back of the scrum with the ball than tied up with the props at the front.
This is really looking good for the new season, a large squad is great news for the club. However all these players need game time and it seems as though we now have enough front row to regularly put out an extras xv. The Nighthawks are the one option we have but are there the fixtures required for the players to be in the position to retain match fitness? Would it be possible to enter into a pool for saturdays ? I presume this facility still exists for fixture shortfalls cancellations etc. Yes I know that it can be last minute stuff but surely for continuation of form it would be worth the effort to attempt. Any thoughts ?
in reply to auntie pastie re Tom Cowell, yes he did play as No 8 for willenhall last season but he feels that No 2 is the position he is best suited to, which i believe is how the cov club see it.
