Phil Maynard tells Coventry to go direct against Stourbridge

COVENTRY’S players have been urged to take better care of the ball and show a more direct approach in tomorrow’s National League One game against Stourbridge at the Butts Park Arena.

 

After a hard-earned win over Cinderford on the opening day of the season, Cov came unstuck in a big way at Wharfedale last week – letting slip a 10-0 lead to go down to a heavy 31-10 defeat.

“After that it’s imperative that we up our game this week,” said rugby director Phil Maynard. “Statistically we only carried the ball four times in the first half and you are not going to win games that way.

“We have got to concentrate on primary ball and, when we have it, looking after it.

"What ball we did have last week we tended to give back too easily and you are not going to apply any pressure if you do that."

“We defended well for long periods, but we had to because in contrast to us, they protected the ball very well and didn’t give us any opportunities.

“They won the battle of the game line, with the ball or without it, and we weren’t effective enough to make it difficult for them.

“We’ve spent this week looking at that and how we can be more direct.

“The lads were hurt by what happened and they are determined to put in a performance tomorrow which fits the occasion and lift themselves back up.”

Looks like Maynards words of wisdom did the trick! NOT..Sorry, even though we won it was another poor perfomance against an even poorer stourbridge who havent won yet this season.
