COVENTRY lock Sam Herrington has added a dose of reality to the optimism emanating from Butts Park Arena by claiming the National One outfit are not yet playing to their full potential.

The powerful second row, who has started four of Cov’s first five matches, says he is largely pleased with the results that have seen his side rise to seventh in the table, with three wins and a draw.

But he also admits there is still more to come and that Coventry need to recapture the cutting edge that made them so dangerous last season, without sacrificing any of their new-found defensive solidity.

“Any player would have to say we want to be five from five and that’s the only thing that would have been good enough,” the 24-year-old said.

“But realistically have we played well enough? Actually I don’t think we have. We have started reasonably well but we have got many more gears to go.

“This team is only going to get stronger and stronger and come midway through the season I think we will be writing a few teams off.

“We have certainly got a few more gears to go up in the pack, our scrummage has not been as effective as we want it to be yet but we are getting there.

“Our lineout is getting back to where it was pre-season, when it was very good and outside of that we have full confidence in the boys playing behind the scrum.

“They are doing a very good job, our defence is solid, last year it was very weak and this year it has become a strength of ours.

“We have tried to look at our weaknesses and turn them into strengths. We have just got to look at what were our strengths now.”

Which, as Herrington intimates, is out wide where the absence of last year’s wing partnership of Tom Harris and Jeff Gregson through injury, has left Cov struggling to finish off openings.

As a result Coventry are one of only two teams in the league, along with Birmingham & Solihull, to have not yet picked up a try bonus and rugby director Phil Maynard has privately identified this as a concern.
