Dave Addleton optmistic his pack well suited to winter rugby

COVENTRY coach Dave Addleton is confident his forwards have the tools they need to thrive in the wet conditions that mark the middle third of the National One season.

The Blue and White pack answered its critics on Saturday with a powerful display that helped Cov bounce back from last weekend’s disappointing loss at home to Cambridge, with a superb 32-27 win at Tynedale.

That lifted Cov to fifth in the table and to within one win of second placed Macclesfield, who they face at Butts Park Arena this weekend.

But with the weather set to deteriorate in the next few days Coventry know they will have to adapt tactically, which means being strong up front and playing more pragmatically behind the scrum.

And Addleton believes that if anything those conditions will suit his front row heavyweights and big ball carriers like Sam Herrington and that stickier pitches won’t necessarily see Cov fall off the early pace near the top of the league.

“I think there’s a lot to play for, we have got a lot of bad weather coming up soon,” he said.

“It’s all been top of the ground rugby so far and it’s been difficult for guys like Adam Parkins, who’s 20st, to get around in the heat.

“But we have got the big boys and they’ll all be pretty happy when it starts to rain. We’ve also got someone who can steer the ship, Luke Myring has been fantastic and Elliott Read is developing with every game.”

Addleton’s optimism stems from the response his players made to the last-minute heart-break they suffered in their last appearance at home.
