Dave Addleton dismisses concerns over Cov's maul defence.

COVENTRY forwards coach Dave Addleton insists he was not alarmed by his side’s failure to cope with Blackheath’s mauling game, which resulted in a second National One defeat in three matches.

Even though they left London empty handed and on the wrong end of a 34-25 loss, Coventry competed well against an experienced Blackheath side and actually led at half-time.

However, the three tries the hosts scored from catch and drive lineouts proved decisive and with that tactic likely to become more prevalent as the conditions deteriorate, it is important Cov don’t get a reputation as being vulnerable.

Former hooker Addleton is convinced they won’t and says his charges know how to deal with it. “We were not happy with the way they drove us over from a couple of lineouts,” Addleton admitted.

“We need to nip that in the bud and we’ll do plenty of work on that this week. It hasn’t been an issue for us for the last couple of months, they just got the better of us on the day.

“We have got a couple of systems in place to do address but basically the guys know they did not climb into them or disrupt as much as we needed them to. You’ve got to disrupt because otherwise it just becomes a pushing contest.”

Losing Alex Nash before kick-off did not help. The openside had started very game but pulled out ill and Addleton conceded the former Rugby Lions man was conspicuous by his absence.
