Maynard: Coventry will work hard to improve

COVENTRY will regroup over the Christmas break and step back to square one after Saturday’s 20-12 loss at Stourbridge – their third successive National League One defeat.

Cov dominated the first 25 minutes at Stourton Park without success, and after falling behind to an unconverted try before the break they rarely threatened to find a way back against their bottom-three hosts.

“It was a disappointing performance,” conceded rugby director Phil Maynard.

“We lacked accuracy throughout our game and our decision-making was poor.

“We’ve got to take stock, roll our sleeves up and start the season again on January 1.

"We’re in a bit of a hole at the minute and the injuries we have in the squad don’t help.

"But that’s the way it is and we have to use the time we have now to get things back on track.”

Added Maynard: “We talked all week about the importance of field position and then we didn’t do it.

"There were some poor decisions taken out there today.

“We played all the rugby in the first half but just didn’t penetrate and when it’s hard going, it just gets harder.

"The lads have come off the pitch tired – they had to work twice as hard today as they would when they are winning.”

Cov take on a Northampton Saints XV at the Butts Park Arena on Thursday night, kick-off 7.30pm.
