James Otutaha hopes to build Coventry career.

EW Coventry centre James Otutaha hopes to build a career for himself at Butts Park Arena.

The former Marist North Harbour midfielder made his debut when he came off the bench 57 minutes into Saturday’s National One defeat at Cambridge.

And the 28-year-old says he hopes that appearance was the first of many in Blue and White after he turned in an impressive cameo as a replacement for youngster Jack Green.

While Otutaha has signed until the end of the season he wants to do enough to extend his stay into next term and help Coventry fulfil their undoubted potential.

“It would be nice to come in and play well and they might then offer me a contract for next year. I would definitely be interested,” he said.

“I have just passed my builders’ certificate in New Zealand but I would like to give rugby a good shot. Coventry is a good club, the set-up is really professional and they have got a lot of young lads with enthusiasm.

“But they also need someone to help bring them through, a couple of old heads to calm them down and say ‘We need to do this’. Hopefully I can offer something like that.”

The ex-Brixham player arrived in the UK at the end of last year after playing rugby league in New Zealand last season and had originally expected to sign with Sedgley Park.
