Dave Addleton admits Coventry's opener wasn't up to par.

FORWARDS coach Dave Addleton conceded that Coventry’s performance fell well below expectation in a 37-13 opening-day defeat to Ealing Trailfinders.

Cov were outmuscled and generally outplayed by last season’s National League One runners-up, leaving plenty to ponder ahead of this weekend’s trip to Cinderford. “We just didn’t perform and we have to take a close look at why,” said Addleton. “Not to take anything away from Ealing but we did not play anywhere near the level we know we can.

“It was a very disappointing first game and especially in front of our own fans.”

Cov struggled to contain Ealing in the scrum, a situation compounded by an early injury to prop Bronson Ross, which left them without a solid platform from which to attack for most of the game.

Added Addleton: “It starts up front, you have got to have parity there and we didn’t get it. We didn’t front up in the scrum, which wasn’t expected after our pre-season games where we matched fire with fire against some strong Welsh packs.

“As a whole we didn’t play to any of the structure we showed pre-season and we didn’t have the direction we needed from half-back. We locked the dressing room door afterwards and talked it all through, the guys all know what is expected of them and now we have got to put this one behind us.”

losing one prop doesnt excuse the forwards performance...that says we have no strength in depth in the props..

How many times did we hear this last season. Jam tomorrow? I was bouyed up pre season with the 'promising' signings, but although this is early doors, Saturday didn't give me a good feeling. It's a new young team (again) so maybe they need time to develop. Hope springs eternal.
