STOURBRIDGE battled their way to their first back to back victory of the season in a dour contest against Southend in the bitter cold wind and gales of Stourton Park. In the end it all came down to the boot of Ally Bressington just past the hour mark when he landed a penalty to give Stour a lead they defended to the bitter end. The visitors had opened with a first-minute penalty from Sfly-half Sid Hoult and with 10 minutes on the clock a converted try from second-row and skipper Andrew McClintock, opened up a 10-0 lead as Stour struggled to find a foothold in the swirling wind and against a well drilled Southend pack.

They hung on though and even managed to reduce the deficit with a Bressington penalty to turn 10-3 down.

That was quickly closed when Stour scrum-half Tom Richardson picked up a loose ball with less than 30 seconds gone and sprinted 40 metres to the line.

Ten minutes later Stour were ahead when winger Tom Hughes found a gap and then released Scott Morris to go over.

Bressington converted and Stourbridge had found a little daylight at 15-10.

It lasted four minutes before scrum-half Rhys Powell went over for an unconverted try to level.

Then came Bressington’s 62nd-minute penalty and a nervous 20 minutes, including holding on to possession through five minutes of injury time for the fourth victory of the season.
