COVENTRY have been boosted by the return of several players ahead of this weekend’s Championship clash with Doncaster. For the first time in two months, Phil Maynard will be able to call on flanker Ben Pons following the youngster’s recovery from a shoulder injury. The openside has not played since picking up the knock against Nottingham on October 16. The rugby director also has Phil MacKenzie back on board after the centre returned from Canada where he had been on family business.

And Romain Plantey is also back from his shoulder problem and can expect to come straight into the side to face the Knights on Saturday.

That gives Maynard virtually a full squad from which to choose as Cov look to bounce back from last weekend’s disappointment at Moseley.

Even though they ended up on the wrong side of a 26-20 scoreline, Maynard saw enough in his team’s performance to suggest they can still cause problems despite their league position.

Much of that is down to the fact Cov have been deducted 15 points for going into administration and as Moseley skipper Neil Mason was keen to point out last weekend – ‘that hasn’t made Coventry a bad side’.

Maynard agrees: “I think every time we play we can win.

“There is not a side in this league that we should not beat.

“Even now I still cringe at losing to Moseley and drawing with Bedford.

“They were two matches we could and should have won.
