Coventry wing Tom Harris learns from long lay off.

COVENTRY try machine Tom Harris claims he has ‘paid a big price’ for ignoring last season’s fitness concerns.

The winger has not played since April last year after requiring surgery to rectify a long-standing toe injury.

His misery was compounded in early November when in his first week back training he hyper-extended his shoulder and put himself out for another couple of months.

And he was due to return to first-team action in Saturday’s trip to Blaydon, only for the elements to conspire against him when the match was cancelled because of a frozen pitch.

That enforced lay-off has given the former Rugby Lions man, who made a massive impact last term with 18 tries in his first season at the Butts Park Arena, more than enough time to reflect on how his condition was handled.

Harris claims he played several matches when he was not fit, something he regrets. “I cannot believe it has gone on this long,” he said.

“Looking back I would have treated it 100 per cent differently. I would not have played so many games last year. I played every minute of every game and it’s staggering how much that takes out of your body.

“But I didn’t listen to my body, when you have to rest, you have to rest but that’s quite hard to say, you just carry on. I have paid a big price for that but I have learned from it.”
