RUGBY director Phil Maynard conceded that Coventry shot themselves in the foot as they slipped to a 27-15 National League One defeat at Rosslyn Park.
Cov struggled for continuity throughout the 80 minutes at Roehampton as a shaky performance in the scrum and line-out led to a series of errors and handed the initiative to the home side.
“It was a wasted opportunity,” said Maynard. “We didn’t click in the set pieces – it was a very disappointing performance and really we handed the game to them.
“I don’t think we’ll ever have a better chance of going to Rosslyn Park and winning, but if you can’t create a platform to launch attacks you are not going to go far. “If you can’t get clean primary ball, you are going to be under pressure throughout the team.
“I’m not blaming any of the backs, there were a few frailties there but they need a platform to generate momentum and without that, you can’t expect them to perform.
