COVENTRY may have the meanest defence in the whole of National League One, but it won’t count for much unless they can step things up at the opposite end of the field.

Not for the first time this season, this was one they should have won but didn’t because of their game management.

Cov’s domination in the set scrum led to two penalty tries and they disrupted Park’s line-out all game with skipper Scott Morgan consistently stealing possession at the front.

But that advantage up front was nullified by what happened elsewhere with Cov again failing to get the best out of their possession.

Too much of it was kicked away, and a lack of penetration against a side that had conceded over 200 points in their last four games was compounded by the number of knock-ons.

Cov might have had two more tries in the first half, Liam Munro getting over the line only for referee John Meredith to call a double movement and a Tom Harris score ruled out for a forward pass.

But Park won too many of the 50-50 balls, and over the whole game it has to be said that they looked the hungrier for it – leaving Cov with plenty to ponder before what has now become an extremely important game for them at the Butts Park Arena this coming Saturday against Cinderford.

Following a lively start by Cov, Steve Collins opened the scoring for Park with a penalty after six minutes.

Cov were already causing problems for the home side in the scrum and they were rewarded with a penalty try on 14 minutes, Cliffie Hodgson adding the conversion, but Collins kicked a second penalty four minutes later and Park then survived ten minutes with full-back Phil Largan in the sin bin without being put under any real pressure.
