Coventry have made their second acquisition in a matter of days from Championship outfit Bedford Blues, with the arrival of utility back Mark Kohler.

The former Canada Under 20 three-quarter has signed for next season and follows hooker Chris Locke from Goldington Road as rugby director Phil Maynard looks to introduce quality into his Coventry squad.

However, it has also been announced that Maynard has lost last term’s tighthead Bronson Ross, who has agreed a move to RaboDirect Pro 12 outfit Ulster.

New Zealander Ross started 22 of Cov’s 29 National One games, including the final 18, but leaves after just one season at Butts Park.

“I am delighted to be joining one of the best rugby operations in Europe,” Ross said. “My mother was originally from Belfast, I have a lot of family there, so it will be great to represent the Province.”

But Kohler’s arrival addresses one of Coventry’s major shortcomings last season, a lack of pace.

The 23-year-old has that in abundance and although he found first team rugby difficult to come by at Bedford, he certainly made his presence felt in the club’s British & Irish Cup campaign in which he scored eight tries.

Bunkum. Absolute bunkum. Intelligence was the shortcoming, not a lack of pace. I saw most games last year and can count on one hand the times the wingers had the ball passed to them with any space at all.

I have already posted the fact that Coventry could have Usain Bolt on the wing, but if they are not smart enough to deliver the ball to him at the right time then so what?

Oh dear. I do hope that Coventry are not recruiting just for the sake of it.

Both new signings have good reviews from their supporters and look to be good signings for the club. I do however agree with R Hess that we seemingly lack the ability to get the ball out to the wing, but also feel our wingers with the exception of Tom Collins did not make that many meaningful runs and take the initiative, this may have been due to the use of centers on the wing.
