The smiles were back as Coventry rediscovered their scoring touch with a seven-try demolition of first-time visitors Worthing.

 2 Worthing

It was as one-sided a game as you could see at National League One level with the home side on top of the heavy conditions at the Butts Park Arena from the start and always in control.

The forwards did the hard graft in the first half against a strong wind, dominating the set piece to take Cov into a 19-5 lead as Worthing rarely threatened.

And it was one-way traffic after the break with the visitors struggling to get out of their own half and, gamely as they defended, put to the sword in the closing minutes as the gaps opened up and Cov signed off with a three-try flourish.

There were eye-catching performances all over the pitch for Cov. Jacques Le Roux profited from the domination up front to carve holes through the Worthing midfield; new signing Roan van Heerden capped an impressive hour with a try-saving, 60-metre chase to haul down winger Matt Lasis, who had a 10-metre start on the South African second row; and 18-year-old scrum-half Pierre Ferre marked a highly promising full debut with a try.

But the biggest influence on Cov’s game was the presence, and experience, of head coach Scott Morgan who lined up in the second row for the first time in two months and played the whole 80 minutes.

Cov look a different side when the Wales international is on the field, not only for his line-out play, carries and work around the breakdown but also the way he encourages the players around him and his leadership.

Cov had a game plan, and with Morgan there, this time they stuck with it from first to last with a performance which vindicated the tough selection decisions which followed the previous week’s defeat at Blackheath.
