END OF SEASON POLL Part 4

By Darraghgirl
August 7 2015

And so we come to the final part of this year's poll. Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote and hopefully it has given us all a giggle during the rugby-free desert of July and August. Yet again in the presence of 2 indepent scrutineers (the reason why will become apparent) - both the dog and the goldfish were on hand to oversee the count - here are the final votes from this year's poll:-

1. Best Saracens Moment.

Most of you focused on the Final (not surprisingly) but there were honorable mentions for the LV final win and the game in Paris, both the drama of the win at the kick itself (more later). So the final it is. You mentioned the final whistle of course, the 3rd try (when victory looked certain - did it??) and lifting the cup but your choice of the Best Saracens Moment of 2014/15 was becoming Champions again.

2. Worst Saracens Moment

There were definitely a few bad times mixed up in the good! You remembered the final whistle in St Etienne when the European dream was finally over, the "unpleasantness" of certain Saints fans at Stadium MK, the loss to Exeter in the penultimate round of the Premiership which almost put paid to a semi-final place and the first half performance against Northampton at Allianz, but the match which seems to have caused most angst was the game at Kingsholm when, as one person put it, "we went from a win with a try bonus to  defeat in a few seconds". So the worst Saracens' moment of 2014/15 was James Hook's successful penalty from half way to win the game for Gloucester at Kingsholm.

3. Best Saracens individual contribution.

There was a mention here for the late (of this parish anyway) and much lamented David Strettle's hat-trick against Wasps at the LDH and for Jamie George's extraordinary try in the final where he out paced the might of Bath's celebrated backs but 2 performances attracted the most votes. A lot of you chose Billy Vunipola's momentous performance against Munster but the Best individual performance for 2014/15 was of course Marcello Bosch and that Amazing penalty kick in Paris.

4. Funniest Moment of the Season

No stand out "Brits" moments this year. Some of your choices were a bit ironic such as Bath picking Sam Burgess ahead of Carl Fearns & Matt Garvey, "Praise" for the diamond formation just before it collapsed, Northampton not winning anything & Northampton fans cheering for the opposition (in vain) in 2 finals. You also mentioned our inability to tackle Fonua in the London Welsh games and Billy's rather unfortunate "non try" at Stadium MK. But the 2 events which attracted most votes were Mobo's attempt at a conversion in his final appearance for Sarries Storm and the Funniest moment of the Season Saracens and Northampton turing up in the same colours at Stadium MK

5. Best Referee

Last year's winner Nigel Owens attracted a lot of support and it was good to see votes for young referee Matt Carley but by the narrowest of margins (and maybe because he refereed the final!) this year's Best referee is Wayne Barnes

6. Worst Referee

Well you have long memories! There were a surprising number of votes for Tim "where's my card" Wigglesworth. Greg Garner and Graham Hughes (of course) also got some votes and there was 1 for poor old Dean Richards  just because of his name. Someone mentioned "that cr*p ypungster we had at Allianz near the end of the season" but no one seems to remember who he was! However once again, your least favourite whistle blower last season was the one and only J P Doyle

7. Best Media Perfromance by a rugby celebrity or Broadcaster

There were lots of plaudits for varoius member of the BT Sport team. David Flatman, Neil Durden-Smith, Ben Kay, Austin Healey & Nick Mullins all received support along with some notable efforts by less experienced guest presenters like Justin Marshall, Michael Lynagh & the gorgeous Thomas Castaignede (who can resist those Gallic tones). Charlie Morgan from Rugby World also got a mention but yet again there was only 1 winner. The best media perfromance by a rugby broadcaster in 2014/15 was by Will Greenwood

8. Worst Media Performance by a rugby celebrity or Broadcaster

I think there has only ever been 1 winner of this category and that didn't change this year but at least there was a bit of competition. Austin Healey and Jeremy Guscott were the subject of considerable derision but overwhelmingly, the Rugby Broadcaster you hold in the lowest esteem is Stuart Barnes

9. Michael Gentleman Award for the Best contribution to the Message Board

So this is where the independent scrutineers came in. Azp_Jim and Tigergeezer both received honorable mention but the votes were split between Behind the Bench for all his amazing previews and reports this season and little ol' me. Despite several recounts I'm afraid that once again you voted for me. Apologies to BTB who really did deserve it this time (and got my vote) and thanks to everyone who wrote previews or reports last season or who just posted interesting/funny/ironic/sardonic/witty comments for us all to enjoy.

So that's it for another year.

It's still a long time before we have any proper rugby to write about and yours truly is off on her hols in a couple of weeks so as always, ANY ARTICLES TO KEEP THE SITE ALIVE ARE GRATEFULLY RECEIVED.

+1 DG has played a blinder while I've been grappling with IT disasters at home and on the mobile!

A well earned safari awaits. For her, not me!
