| Match Report Worcester Wanderers I -v- Evesham I Saturday 31st August 2002 @ Sixways. The pre-season friendly game between the Wanderers and Evesham ended with a victory for the visitors who scored four tries to the Wanderers single score. The 7 - 24 scoreline does not reflect the game, as Worcester forced Evesham to play much of the early game between the Evesham 22 and the half way line. The first two tries were scored in the first half by Evesham turning over Worcester ball and their backs breaking away for 50-60 yard sprints to the line. The Wanderers stepped up the pressure in the second half and gained their solitary try, which was converted by Steve Tustin. Despite sustained attempts by the Worcester backs, once more Evesham broke away to take the score to 7 - 19. Evesham then seized the initiative and took the game to Worcester. The final try came from a line out at the Worcester 5 metre line, from which the Evesham scrum half made a crossfield run and instead of the expected 'pop' to other players coming into the line, he wrong footed the defence and scored under the posts to clinch the game at 7 - 24. The Wanderers had fielded a depleted side for this fixture as they were short of players for the game, due to holidays and end of season cricket commitment by some key players. Considering that Evesham are in Midlands 3 West (South) which is two Leagues above Worcester, the Wanderers gave a good performance, which actually belies the final score. |
