Terrace Verdict from Mounts Bay

In very wet and gale force wind conditions Coventry defended the Penzance end. It soon became evident that the COV team had chosen the correct tactics for the game. With Mr Nigel Higginson as the change referee observing what could lead to a difficult afternoon. The Cov forwards took play for the first five mins up to the Mounts Bay try line with pick and drive being the option.

Only for Rob Dugard to have a penalty award against him for an offence during a maul.

Cov continued to apply pressure that was dealt with on the retreat by the BAY. Soon the rain intensified giving even more standing water on the field of play. It was from a rare first half kick into the BAY 22 that Cov though Greg Gillanders won a line out against the throw that the ball was moved across field for Laurie Mcglone to be the player identified as being at the bottom of the heap with the grounded ball.

The conversion against the very high wind was missed by Ben Russell. Bay continued with the kick off again along the floor, Which was picked up and driven forward by the COV pack enjoying the now monsoon like conditions. After an attack by Mounts Bay into the Coventry 22 Ben Toft took charge with a fine break which took play just over the half way line, Ben Russell then made a fine break which lead to him aquaplaning over the line for a try which he converted.

With the referee calling both skippers together many in the crowd were wondering if this was to be the end of the game. But no the two teams carried with an entertain game given the foul conditions.

Cov fielded the second half now playing in the the blue and white home kit, With Bay now in their away kit of white. with the field now reminiscent of the Flanders and Swann song Mud, Mud glorious mud. the Bay started the stronger with them adopting the same tatic as COV used in the first half.

Bay where awarded a penalty which they duly converted to complete the scoring for the afternoon. The water at the stand side of the ground on the tarmac walkway at this time was ankle deep. It is said by many that this was the worst weather conditions that they had seen a game take place in. But give full credit to both teams for there erformance during the game.
