Hull Ionians........22 Rugby Lions.........15 Rugby's players are at a loss to explain their dreadful away form that has finally buried their play-off hopes in National Division Three North. James Hawken said after a dressing room post mortem: "The players are disappointed and wondering themselves why they are so good at home and cannot play the same way away from home.

"This is despite the fact we have been in winning positions in just about every away game right through the season."

Coach Mark Ellis called the meeting productive. "We had a calm and collected discussion straight after the game, a hot debrief if you like," he said.

Lions controlled the scoreboard in the first half when they scored two tries through Stuart Riding and Chris Murphy from the little ball they saw, while Hull's backs wasted several clear overlaps.

When Hawken added a penalty on the restart to his first-half conversion, Lions looked safe at 15-3, but Hull completely dominated possession from then on with Lions sitting back and creating almost nothing themselves.

Finally Hull broke the deadlock through Gary Stephenson on 70 minutes and, with Riding sinbinned, Lions conceded two added-time converted tries from Karl Birch and Joe Donkin to leave them helpless.
