FORMER Coventry chief executive Ian Carvell will be assisting in the future development of Rugby Lions' commercial strategy. The successful Coventry businessman sees the move as a new challenge and a great opportunity to return to the game as Lions plan to climb back through the National Leagues.

"Being invited to do some work at Rugby Lions alongside chairman David Owen and chief executive Mal Malik is a great honour," said Carvell, who masterminded the transformation of The Cottage public house in Earlsdon into a trendy
wine bar, eating and music venue.

"They and wing legend Eddie Saunders are totally dedicated to restoring Lions to their former glory and I am flattered to be asked to help them."

Added Carvell, also a former director of rugby at Coventry: "I had some great times at Cov and helped to develop a highly successful commercial and playing side at the club.

"I'm delighted to have been given the chance to get deeply involved in rugby football again and at a club with the stature and potential of Rugby Lions.

"Rugby is the birthplace of the game and should be there right at the top. I'm now going to dedicate my efforts to helping them get there.

"The challenge is enormous but I'm determined to give it my best shot.

"Everyone knows my love of the Coventry club and its great supporters, who I see on a regular basis at games and socially, but it's time for me to move on in rugby football terms and Rugby Lions is a challenge that really excites me.

"Our priorities are not only success on the playing field under Mark Ellis, but to develop commercial opportunities.

"Rugby is developing fast as a business centre and I aim to excite interest in the future of the club from the many established firms in the town and those who are locating there."

Carvell will shortly release details of another business venture, The Extra Mile Company, he has been developing for the last year on a 100-acre site in Warwickshire which will offer a wide, and different, range of corporate activities, and is continuing as sponsor of the Coventry Bears rugby league club.
