Match report: Harrogate 17 Rugby Lions 3

RUGBY'S makeshift squad were no match for a well-drilled Harrogate side and the injuries continue to mount. Again using prop Phil Greenbury as an emergency lock, Lions were already 10-3 down playing with a strong wind when centre Matt Goode suffered a severe leg injury. Later, prop Tristan Wati was to leave the pitch with his arm in a sling.

At least Lions showed a willingness to fight to the end, but yet again individual errors under-mined any effort to compete seriously for the spoils.

Forwards coach Steve Halsey said: "We had a game plan we executed for perhaps ten minutes of the match. Yet again, basic errors and lapses of concentration thwarted our best intentions.

"But we have blooded some more of our youngsters such as prop Terry Boneham and that was a plus for us."

Lions were 10-3 down at the break, Harrogate scorng tries early and late through Dan Hardman and Chris Harris with James Hawken's penalty for Lions coming in between.

Harrogate dominated much of the second half but only added one further try by Ed Smithies and converted by Nick Wainwright on 55 minutes. Lions never threatened a second score, however.

Rugby Lions: Hawken; Murphy, Goode (Roberts 38), Clarke, Hales; Glackin, Rust; Boneham, Overton, Wati (Facer 56), Cheney, Greeenbury (Cowley 78), Nash, Prosser-Shaw, Brady.
