KIWI No.8 Laurie McGlone stretched Coventry's list of league hat-trick scorers to 17 with his three-try burst in Saturday's 29-18 win over Manchester. McGlone, captaining the side with skipper Henno Venter on the bench on his return from injury, touched down twice in six first-half minutes as Cov asserted their authority before the break and then completed his treble six minutes into the second half to seal his side's bonus point.

It was Cov's first try hat-trick since flanker John O'Connor's first-half burst against Sedgley Park two years ago next month.

"I really enjoyed it - it was a good time to do it today," said McGlone who, last season's leading scorer for the side with nine tries, was opening his account for the current campaign.

"It's always special to do something like that - my last one would have been three years or so ago, for my club team Moutere, back home in Blenheim."

Added McGlone: "Our first half was pretty decent, and then in the second half we slipped off a few tackles and let Manchester back in the game.

"When we manage to keep hold of the ball we look a good side, but when we turn it over we can look a bit vulnerable outside.

"Our own expectations are pretty high and although we knew the three games before this one were going to be tough, we were hoping to get some points from them which we didn't.

"We're happy with the five points from this and now we are looking at another 12 to 15 from the next three games which should put us back in the spot in the table where we think we should be." n Manchester hooker Henry Platt, who dislocated his hip after ten minutes of Saturday's game at the Butts Park Arena, is expected to leave University Hospital Coventry today.

"The hip was relocated on Saturday night and after the initial shock, Henry is doing well," said Manchester's director of rugby Dave Baldwin."When I visited him on Saturday night he immediately asked for the result and how the hooker who replaced him had played - he was also apologetic that the hospital had needed to cut off his shorts, which shows he has kept his sense of humour." n RUGBY Lions play Silhillians in the National Colts Cup at Webb Ellis Road tomorrow night (7.45pm).

Interesting take on the hat trick jug scenario. Not sure whether to believe this.... When told that the lads were waiting for him to buy the customary hat trick jug, Laurie reportedly said that "Where I come from everybody buys the player drinks all night!". Mmm - that old NH v SH thing again. When in Rome...!
