BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL 24 LEEDS CARNEGIE 26 Three tries in 20 second-half minutes had earned Bees another unbelievable cup upset and put them within one match of Twickenham for the fourth time in their history. Or so everyone at Sharmans Cross Road thought. In an outstanding display the National Two outfit had bridged the gulfs in finance and infrastructure between the two clubs and were on the point of sending Premiership-bound Leeds where Premiership champions Wasps were dismissed five years earlier.

And it would have been no less than the home team deserved. Even the Leeds coaches admitted that.

But, with seconds left, a try from Leeds prop Philip Swainstop – and the formality of a conversion from Alfredo Di Bernardo, denied Bees their just deserts.

Leeds had won by two points and it is they who take their place in today’s semi-final draw.

However, in these days of austerity we should not waste anything, not even introductions written an hour and a half into 80-minute matches.

The overtime magicked up from somewhere by referee Keith Lewis was just one of several gripes offered by shell-shocked Bees supporters.
