MOSELEY 32 EXETER 24 Cup kings for a decade, cup clowns for the next two, rugby’s most famous stadium will be once again decked out in the red and black of one of its most revered clubs. After 27 years of purgatory Moseley are back at Twickenham. How they deserve it too. This is an organisation that has been to hell and back – twice – since their current president Derek Nutt lifted one half of the John Player Cup in 1982.

They dropped out of the top flight, slipped almost unconscious into the coma of National Two but even though the flame dimmed, it was never extinguished. How brightly it burned here on Saturday, it was just too hot for Exeter to handle.

Having been served up and dispatched gentle dollies in their first two EDF Energy National Trophy rounds, Moseley’s route to HQ has not been an easy one.

Who would have thought that a pair of scratchy victories over Henley and Bridgwater & Albion would have led to a seat-of-the-pants win away to London Welsh?

And who in their right mind would have predicted that half a performance at Old Deer Park would have produced the best 80 minutes of their season against £2 million Exeter?

Quite simply Moseley were incessant. Their defensive conviction never wavered, their tackling was rarely less than destructive and their organisation was breached but never broke down. The waves of Exeter’s attacks simply lapped up against the red rocks and dispersed into nothing.

For the most part the promotion chasing Chiefs were cowed into error and indecision and that was where the hosts made hay.

The rejuvenated Dan Norton took his tally to five in four games with another brace, Nathan Bressington blazed his way to a second in two matches and that old warrior Terry Sigley grabbed his second in a month.
