Neil Mitchell is expecting his Stourbridge side to receive the traditional feisty reception at Blundellsands this weekend, even though Waterloo have already been relegated and if points really did mean prizes the National Two strugglers would be akin to a Head Teacher at Upper Sixth’s Award Day. The Merseysiders have had a desperate season and the fact they have given away 310 in their last games suggests it is only getting worse.

Last time out they allowed Redruth to harvest 14 tries in a 96-5 victory bringing the total conceded to 1070 for the campaign.

Yet Mitchell thinks Stourbridge cannot afford any complacency given their own, by comparison rather more modest, troubles.

Where Loo have haemorrhaged points Stour are leaking quality threequarters at an alarming rate with Jon Higgins out for the season and Martin Freeman and John Holtby in Hong Kong. Even regular stand-by Marcus Cook is in the Far East.

Which means Mitchell thinks the only certainty about their trip north is that it will provide a difficult match.

“There is no question that the back of our minds will be the fact they conceded 96 points last week but we have to forget that,” he says.

“Waterloo are a much harder team at home and they will be well motivated to prove a few things. We can take nothing for granted.”
