Coundon Court 13 The Woodlands 8 Before a lively and boisterous BPA crowd, the Malcolm Cup Final, first competed for in 1953, was won by Coundon Court after an exciting and well fought match. The game followed the well worn path of recent encounters between the two sides, as Coundon Court took their obligatory 1st half lead, only for Woodlands to spend the 2nd half trying to catch up. Credit to Coundon Court for defending well in the 2nd half, keeping Woodlands at bay, for a well earned victory.

The 1st half saw Coundon Court make an excellent start with winger Jeevan Dulai prominent. As Woodlands defended, Coundon Court were awarded a penalty for George Deegan to slot over the 25m kick.

Coundon Court continued to maintain their pressure  with good breaks again by Dulai, and Anton Campbell. The pressure eventually told as on 9min Coundon Court had another penalty again from 25m out for Deegan to kick, making score 6 : 0 to Coundon Court.

CC continued to press and a good break by Michael Clamp came to nothing as a scoring pass to Dulai was ruled forward. Woodlands took full advantage after a break by Lewis Gregory, resulted in a penalty to Woodlands. On 16min Joe Kinnersley kicked this 25m penalty to make score Coundon Court 6 The Woodlands 3.

CC fought straight back, deciding to run a penalty. The impressive Matthew Thrippleton made the initial break for centre Charlie Dent to score by the posts on 17min, duly converted by Deegan to make score Coundon Court 13  The Woodlands 3.  Despite Woodlands pressure this remained the score at halftime.

The 2nd half saw the bigger Coundon Court pack putting Woodlands scrum under pressure. The game continued to ebb and flow, with both sides defensively on top. Yet Woodlands were now getting more into the game running at all opportunities, with Adam Skyrme and Lewis Gregory prominent. Eventually the pressure told as winger Myles Lynch  scored an excellent unconverted try on 11mins, making score Coundon Court 13 The Woodlands 8.

It was now all Woodlands as they went for the winning score, but tremendous CC defending thwarted them. Despite 6mins of added time Coundon Court held out in the last phrenetic minutes as Woodlands had to run it deep from their own half.

In the end a deserved win for Coundon Court for their 1st half performance, coupled with their excellent defensive work in the 2nd, also helped by their improving scrum and lineout work.
