Forward jetting in to bolster Coventry squad

COVENTRY’S growing overseas contingent has been expanded by the signing of New Zealand-based back row forward John Cocker. The 28-year-old, who can play in all three back row positions, arrives with extensive experience of the Air New Zealand Cup – the country’s provincial championship – for Northland and has also played World Cup Sevens rugby for Tonga. Cocker, 6ft 1in and 16st, is a powerful ball carrier and excels at the back of the line-out.

“I was put in touch with John through a contact I have out there,” said Cov’s rugby director Phil Maynard. “He was looking to move over here and I liked what I saw. He is a big tackler as well as a strong runner, and he has played at a very good level of rugby.”

Maynard, who expects Cocker to arrive in the next three weeks, is putting the finishing touches to his squad for the inaugural Championship season and two prominent signings at fly-half are imminent in addition to a three-quarter.
