COVENTRY BEARS maintained their play-off drive with a 28-6 win against old rivals Leicester Phoenix – avenging an earlier 34-30 setback against the side schooled by their former coach Ty Watson. Needing victories in their back-to-back derbies against Leicester and Birmingham Bulldogs, Coventry got off to the ideal start when current coach Alan Robinson charged through to set up Ryan Jenkins charged through to set up Ryan Jenkins for a try under the posts.

Phoenix responded when Coventry conceded a penalty, but a fine solo run by winger Andy McGrory restored the Bears edge and, as conditions deteriorated, Mark Challis dashed through to give them a 14-6 advantage.

Both sides found it difficult to maintain any fluency in the downpour, but Stuart Lee snapped up another try three minutes into the second half and centre Ben Hands quickly followed suit with another powerful run.

Bears reserved their best for last as Tanaka Chamunakara collected the ball on his own 20m line, wriggled through the ruck and side-stepped the Phoenix full-back to hare his way to the line for a dazzling individual effort.

“I was really impressed with our defensive effort,” said Robinson. “The way we kept our discipline in controlling the game under difficult conditions. Ryan Jenkins deserved his nomination as man of the match”
