RUGBY LIONS roared defiantly with a sterling second-half display, but came up narrowly short against Harrogate as they dropped to a 27-21 defeat. But the old adage that every cloud has a silver lining rang true for Rugby, as they picked up the losing bonus point their second-half performance duly merited. Lions went ahead early on through Lloyd Warner’s penalty, but Harrogate’s heavier pack then took over, culminating in Lions losing two men to yellow cards.

And the hosts made them pay three times over, as they went over three times in quick succession before the break, to build-up a commanding 19-3 advantage.

Harrogate then went further ahead with another try, before the Lions burst into life, as Joss Andrews and Tom Harris both bagged tries, while Warner converted one and struck a penalty to make it 24-21.

But Mike Aspinall’s late penalty gave Harrogate breathing space, and they hung on to win.

“Harrogate is a really difficult place to go, so in that respect, we’re pleased about coming away with the bonus point,” said coach Peter Glackin. “We looked to be game short in terms of our preparations, but in the second-half we played to the systems we had in place, and consequently, we looked a totally different side.”
